With the metropolitan region's largest concentration of forested recreational land and scores of sports facilities, the Chicago Southland is perfect for active lifestyles.
Chicago Wilderness is a regional nature reserve that includes more than 225,000 acres of protected natural areas. It stretches from southeastern Wisconsin, through northeastern Illinois and into northwestern Indiana. The protected areas of Chicago Wilderness are forest preserves, state parks, federal lands, county preserves, and privately owned lands. There are also many unprotected natural areas that offer refuge to native wildlife.
The Chicago Wilderness consortium is an alliance of more than 200 public and private organizations working together to protect, restore, study and manage the natural ecosystems of the Chicago region, contribute to the conservation of global biodiversity, and enrich local residents' quality of life.
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District — which serves Homewood, Flossmoor and a portion of Glenwood — is a two-time National Parks & Recreation Association Gold Medal Award Winner. It was named best park district in the country in its population category in 1991 and again in 2006. It strives to provide quality recreation programs, facilities and parks that meet the leisure needs and improve the quality of life for its residents. The district owns 32 park sites and controls more than 365 acres of land. Its parks include a skateboard park, dog park, 25 outdoor tennis courts, 12 soccer fields, 12 ball field diamonds and two community pools. Its facilities include the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, Coyote Run Golf Course, H-F Ice Arena, Marie Irwin Community Center, Goldberg Administration Center, H-F Park District Auditorium and the H-F Sports Complex.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources states their Mission Statement as: “Our mission is to manage, protect and sustain Illinois' natural and cultural resources; provide resource-compatible recreational opportunities and to promote natural resource-related issues for the public's safety and education.”
The Division of Education is responsible for the development and dissemination of educational programs and materials and for training in their use.
The Matteson Parks & Recreation Division is an interconnected network of community, neighborhood and surrounding public lands integrated with residential and business development. The Division provides broadly defined recreation offerings.
The Mighty Acorns program connects students to the land, empowers them to take action, teaches them the science of ecology, and engages them in restoring native plant and animal communities. The program introduces 4th through 6th graders to nature and conservation stewardship through activities based on education, restoration and exploration. In addition to the outdoor field trips, teachers lead their students in pre-activities and post-activities in the classroom to introduce related topics.
The Olympia Fields East Homeowners Association (OFEHA)
is one of 12 homeowner associations in the village of Olympia Fields. The homeowner groups are generally concerned with property and common area maintenance. OFEHA is the largest of the homeowners groups in Olympia Fields with over 400 homes and has the most common areas.
The Olympia Fields Park District is dedicated to providing quality leisure facilities and recreation/education for children, teenagers, adults, seniors and persons of all ages with disabilities. It is also the Park District's goal to preserve open space within the community to assure a high quality environment now and in the future for all Olympia Fields' residents. The Park District own and maintains 117 acres of parks and open space, encompasses 11 park sites, and with baseball fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, trails, sledding hills, Disc Golf, and adventure center facilities located in the various park sites. The Olympia Fields Park District is one of the only 28 out of over 350 park districts throughout the state of Illinois to earn the IPRA/IAPD distinguished Agency Award.
Recreation Equipment Incorporated (REI) is a national outdoor retail co-op dedicated to inspiring, educating and outfitting its members and the community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship. Founded in 1938 by a group of Pacific Northwest mountaineers seeking quality equipment, REI is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and increasing access to outdoor recreation through volunteerism, gear donations and financial contributions.
