Thematic stories about nature or wildlife in our area are explored in our acclaimed series! We’ll create a craft that coincides with the topic of the evening. Children should come in their pj’s and have their favorite wild “stuffed” animal with them. An adult must accompany each child.

Irons Oaks Volunteer Work Day
Date: Saturday, April 12

Are you a part of a Boy or Girl Scout Troop? How about a service group? Come spend the day helping Irons Oaks in our restoration efforts. We will be cutting invasive brush, shrubs and buckthorn. Our goal is to eliminate the invasive brush to give our native plants and trees an opportunity to flourish. There we’ll give a brief training on species identification, tools and safety. Dress for the weather and wear work gloves (recommended), we will be using loppers and saws - meet in the Vollmer Road parking lot. Please RSVP with the Irons Oaks office (481.2330)

If you want your child to be more comfortable in nature or if they have a burning desire to explore the outdoors, this is the class for your little one! We will investigate Irons Oaks prairie, pond and woodland to discover why each habitat is special. We will, weather permitting: hike, play games, read stories and make a craft. (No class March 24)

This area is known for its stunning display of Virginia Bluebells, Blue Eyed Mary and Great White Trillium – spring is the time of year for seeing these amazing and fragile adornments to the woodland floor! Basic Bike Maintenance

Information: Join an REI staff member as they demonstrate simple, at-home and roadside bike maintenance.  You will learn simple maintenance and fixes for common bike issues. Topics will include tires, cleaning, lubing and a basic safety check. Bring your bike along if you’d like a safety check completed.

Information: Try a high-tech treasure hunt!  Geocaching is a great and fun way to explore new locales while on the search for the hidden cache.  Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunt using GPS technology.  Join REI to learn all the basics of where to get coordinates for caches, using your GPS to find the cache and cache etiquette.  There will be a cache to find during the program!

Spring Bird Walk

Illinois is home to hundreds of bird species, many of which can be found at Irons Oaks.  Join an Irons Oaks Naturalist for a stroll through the forest in search of our feathered friends and migrating visitors.  Beginners to experts; all are welcome for this light hike.
Please bring your own binoculars.
